About this tour

This session moves through Cimiez, from the remains of a Roman amphitheatre and bath complex to the rose garden of a working Franciscan monastery built beside them. You see which stonework is original and which has been reconstructed, and why a monastery came to sit directly on top of a Roman settlement. It is a longer session covering nearly two thousand years on one hill above the city.

We move in roughly the order the site developed, pausing longest at the bath ruins before finishing in the monastery garden. Questions come up naturally as the different periods overlap, and I am glad to go back over anything unclear. A short reading list follows for anyone who wants the fuller history.

This suits anyone with a general interest in history rather than expert knowledge, since I build the story from what is visible. It also rewards a longer attention span, since there is real ground to cover on the hill.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nice before heading out.

  2. The Roman arena 21 min

The camera looks over the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, far smaller than the famous arenas elsewhere in the region but still clearly recognisable. I explain what this hill was used for before the Romans arrived at all.

  3. The bath ruins 21 min

Nearby, you see the foundations of a Roman bath complex, the layout of hot and cold rooms still traceable in the stonework. I point out which sections have been reconstructed and which are entirely original.

  4. The monastery garden 21 min

The walk ends in the garden of a working Franciscan monastery, roses planted in beds that have not changed layout in centuries. I explain why the monastery was built directly beside the Roman ruins rather than elsewhere.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Nice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ratatouille and Vieux Nice, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
