The Russian Orthodox Cathedral's onion domes
Highlights
- Six onion domes over a French street
- Brickwork patterns rarely seen here
- A community explained through one building
- Wealthy patrons named and placed
- Architecture that stands out completely
About this tour
This session looks at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, from its six onion domes to the detailed brick and ceramic facade below them. You see why a building this specific was placed in Nice and which patrons funded different sections of it. It is a focused look at one very unusual building rather than a wider walk.
We stay close to the building throughout, moving only far enough to change the angle on the domes. I answer questions about the history as they come up. A short note on the community that built it follows the call.
This suits anyone with an interest in architecture or nineteenth century European history. It also works well paired with a walk through the surrounding villa district.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Nice before heading out.
-
The onion domes 15 min
The camera looks up at the six colourful onion domes, unmistakable against the surrounding villas. I explain why a Russian Orthodox cathedral of this size was built here rather than anywhere else in France.
-
The brickwork facade 15 min
Closer in, you see the detailed brick and ceramic patterning across the lower facade, imported techniques rarely used elsewhere in the city. I point out which sections were funded by which wealthy patrons at the time.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Nice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pan bagnat and Le Port, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 11 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
