Omeriye Mosque, church to mosque
Highlights
- A church that became a mosque
- Gothic origins, Ottoman conversion
- Two traditions, one active building
- Respect kept throughout the visit
- A worshipper's own layered story
About this tour
This session walks the exterior and courtyard of Omeriye Mosque, a building that began as a Gothic-era church before becoming a mosque under Ottoman rule. You see architecture that has carried two distinct religious traditions, explained by someone who has prayed here for years. It stays respectful of an active place of worship throughout.
I keep my voice low and film respectfully whenever prayer is underway, explaining the building's layered history from the courtyard. Questions are welcome once we step back outside.
This suits anyone interested in religious architecture or how buildings change hands over centuries. It also pairs well with the Hamam Omerye session next door.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
