The Henkersteg, the executioner's bridge
Highlights
- A bridge named for the city's executioner
- A dark history beside a quiet island
- A covered wooden crossing over the Pegnitz
- Old Nuremberg's grimmer, quieter corner
- History and calm on the same small bridge
About this tour
This session follows the Henkersteg, a covered wooden footbridge with an unusually dark history, crossing to a small island on the Pegnitz. You see the bridge itself and the quiet island it leads to, and hear how the site's past use contrasts with its calm present. It is a short walk built around one distinctive crossing.
I move at an easy pace across the bridge and onto the island, explaining the history as we go. Questions are welcome throughout, and I send a short note afterwards on the bridge's name and use.
This suits anyone curious about the old town's less obvious corners. It also pairs well with the Tiergarten session for more of Nuremberg's water and rock features.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
