Byzantine frescoes and a merchant's ceiling
Highlights
- Byzantine frescoes, centuries under plaster
- How a mosque preserved Christian paintings
- A ceiling carved without a single nail
- Religious and domestic art, compared
- Craft that survived several centuries
About this tour
This session pairs two very different kinds of craft inside Ohrid's old town. You see Byzantine frescoes inside an eleventh-century cathedral, then a carved wooden ceiling inside a nineteenth-century merchant's house. It moves between religious and domestic art centuries apart.
I explain how the cathedral's later use actually preserved some of its paintings, then spend longer on the ceiling's carving technique, since it usually surprises people once explained. Questions about either are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone who wants Ohrid's art properly explained rather than just glimpsed in passing. It also suits anyone curious about how craft here has survived across such different periods.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
