  • Grünerløkka's small squares and street art
  • Mathallen food hall inside a former factory

About this tour

This session follows the Akerselva river from its waterfalls to the old textile factories along its banks, ending in Grünerløkka's squares and the Mathallen food hall. The guide explains how the river once powered this industrial quarter and who worked in it. It is a walk that traces the river as much as the neighbourhood around it.

The call opens with a sound check, then follows the river upstream stop by stop, with time for questions about the old factories along the way. A short list of cafés and squares worth a longer visit follows once the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in industrial history or Oslo's newer creative neighbourhoods. It also suits anyone who prefers a river walk to a city-centre tour.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oslo before heading out.

  2. Akerselva waterfalls 21 min

The camera follows the Akerselva river as it drops over small waterfalls inside the city, and the guide explains how this river once powered the factories built along its banks.

  3. Old textile factories 21 min

Passing converted brick factory buildings, the guide tells the story of the women who worked the textile mills here, and how the buildings have since become offices and studios.

  4. Grünerløkka and Mathallen 21 min

The walk finishes in Grünerløkka, where the guide points out its small squares and street art before stopping outside Mathallen, the food hall set inside a former factory building.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Oslo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Brown cheese (brunost) and Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Oslo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
