The Folkemuseum's stave church and farmhouses
Highlights
- A stave church moved board by board
- Farmhouses from across Norway, side by side
- Turf roofs still used for insulation
- A reconstructed street from the last century
- Norway's regions in one open-air museum
About this tour
This session circles the Norsk Folkemuseum's open-air grounds from outside its buildings, focused on the Gol stave church and the farmhouses relocated from across Norway. You see the church's dark wooden shingles up close and turf roofs on the farm buildings nearby. Erik traces each structure back to the region it came from.
He moves between buildings at a relaxed pace, since the museum's grounds are spread out and each structure needs a moment of its own. He answers questions about specific regions as their buildings come into frame.
This suits anyone who enjoyed Erik's fortress session and wants Norwegian history away from castles and kings. It also suits families or anyone new to the subject, since the buildings explain themselves without much background needed.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oslo before heading out.
-
Stave church exterior 17 min
The camera circles the thirteenth-century Gol stave church, moved here board by board in the 1880s, and I explain how its tarred wooden shingles have survived for so long.
-
Open-air farm buildings 17 min
Among the relocated farmhouses you see building styles from different Norwegian regions side by side, and I point out which roofs are turf, a traditional insulation method still visible today.
-
Urban street reconstruction 17 min
The walk finishes at the museum's reconstructed early twentieth-century Oslo street, and I explain what each shopfront would have sold before the buildings were moved here from the city centre.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Oslo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Reindeer and Grünerløkka, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Oslo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
