About this tour

This session follows the River Cherwell from the punt station through a willow-lined stretch to an open meadow bend, told by a former punt attendant who knows the water closely. It covers the basic technique of punting and the parts of the river that suit beginners best. It is a nature and river session rather than a building-focused one.

We start at the punt queue with the basic technique explained, then follow the water downstream at an easy pace. Questions about punting and the river's wildlife come up steadily, and I answer from two full summers spent working on this exact stretch. I close with a note on the quietest times to be on the water yourself.

It suits anyone who wants the river experience explained without needing to punt themselves. It also suits nature-minded viewers more than history enthusiasts.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.

  2. Punt station queue 17 min

The camera opens on the queue for punts, and I explain the basic technique of pushing off the riverbed with a pole rather than paddling.

  3. Willow-lined stretch 17 min

Further along, you see a stretch of the river overhung by willows, and I point out how the narrow channel here forces punts to slow down and pass carefully.

  4. Meadow bend 17 min

The route ends at a wide bend where the river opens onto meadow on both sides, and I explain why this stretch is usually the calmest for beginners.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Cowley Road, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
