About this tour

This session walks the Marais through four centuries of neighbours, from the royal square at Place des Vosges to the mansions of Hôtel de Sully and Hôtel Carnavalet. You see the Pletzl, the old Jewish quarter around Rue des Rosiers, and the Guimard synagogue on Rue Pavée. It ends at a surviving stretch of the city's oldest wall.

The guide opens with a sound check, then walks the district stop by stop, tracing who lived where across different centuries. Questions come in live, and a short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how one neighbourhood holds several distinct histories at once. It also suits viewers who have visited the Marais's shops without knowing what came before them.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Paris before heading out.

  2. Place des Vosges 21 min

The camera stands in Place des Vosges, the royal square built in 1612 and still ringed by its original arcades. The guide explains why this square, rather than Notre-Dame, marks the start of Paris's grand town planning.

  3. Hôtel de Sully courtyard 21 min

Through the courtyard of the Hôtel de Sully, seen from inside its gates, the guide points out the carved stone facades typical of the Marais mansions. He walks on to the Hôtel Carnavalet, describing its own courtyard and history.

  4. Rue des Rosiers and the Pletzl 21 min

Along Rue des Rosiers, the heart of the Pletzl, the old Jewish quarter, the guide points out the Guimard synagogue on Rue Pavée, its Art Nouveau facade unlike any other synagogue in the city. He finishes at a surviving stretch of the Philippe Auguste city wall.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Paris: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Escargot and Le Marais, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
