Peine del Viento, sculpture built for the sea
Highlights
- Iron forms set into working rock
- Sculpture designed around the tide
- Waves forced through cut channels
- Chillida's art, built for this spot
- Where sculpture meets the sea
About this tour
This session focuses on the Peine del Viento, Eduardo Chillida's iron sculptures set into the rocks at the western end of Playa de Ondarreta. You see the forms up close and hear how the piece was designed to work with the sea rather than sit apart from it. Eneko explains why this spot was chosen specifically for its wave patterns.
The walk stays close to the sculptures, timed where possible for a tide that makes the rock formations audible. Eneko answers questions about Chillida's wider work as they come up.
This suits anyone interested in public art that responds to its setting. It also pairs well with Eneko's Kursaal session for two very different pieces of modern design in the same city.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of San Sebastian before heading out.
-
Iron sculptures in the rocks 15 min
The camera moves along Eduardo Chillida's iron forms set directly into the rocks at the bay's western end, built to work with the waves rather than against them.
-
Waves through the sculpture 15 min
Depending on the tide, water forces air through channels cut into the rock beneath the sculptures, and I explain how Chillida designed the piece to use that sound deliberately.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about San Sebastian: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pintxos and Centro, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
