About this tour

This session starts at the Portas da Cidade, the arches that once marked Ponta Delgada's old gate, and continues into the main square beyond them. You see the city's black and white paving up close and hear how the arches came to stand where they do now. Marta explains how the city grew outward from these few streets.

The walk moves from the arches straight into the square, with Marta pointing out architectural details along the way rather than rushing between them. She keeps a clear order to the session, moving forward in time as the walk continues.

This suits anyone who likes their history delivered in a clear sequence. It also works as a short first stop before Marta's longer fort and church session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ponta Delgada before heading out.

  2. Portas da Cidade 21 min

The camera stands beneath the three eighteenth century arches that once marked the old town gate, and I explain how they were moved to their current spot in the nineteenth century.

  3. Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral 21 min

Just beyond the arches, the black basalt and white plaster paving of the main square spreads out toward the sea. I point out the pattern's design and explain why this contrast defines so much of the city's architecture.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Ponta Delgada: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Linguiça açoriana and Centro Histórico, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Azores time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
