About this tour

This session follows Porto's Bolhão market since its recent restoration, moving from the fish and flower stalls on the main floor to the smaller specialty stalls in the upper gallery. Igor points out which traders have worked here since before the market closed for years of rebuilding. The session covers both the produce and the building's own recent history.

Igor moves at an easy pace between stalls, holding the phone close enough that the produce is clearly visible. He asks stallholders what changed for them personally during the closure and takes viewer questions throughout. A short list of what he bought follows the call.

This suits anyone curious about Porto's food culture and how a historic market survives modernisation. It also suits visitors planning their own trip who want to know what has changed.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Porto before heading out.

  2. The fish and flower stalls 21 min

The camera moves along stalls of fresh fish laid on ice beside buckets of cut flowers, a combination unique to this market's layout. Igor points out which traders have worked here since before the recent restoration.

  3. The upper gallery 21 min

Above the main floor, a gallery of smaller stalls sells cheese, bread and preserves. Igor explains what changed visibly in the building during its years-long closure for restoration.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Porto: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bacalhau and Vila Nova de Gaia, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
