About this tour

This session walks the Dutch Quarter, from a row of step-gabled houses on Mittelstraße to a restored courtyard house nearby. You see the red-brick facades built in the 1730s for Dutch craftsmen invited to settle here. The walk finishes inside a courtyard, where the low doorways and narrow stairs still follow Dutch rather than Prussian proportions.

We begin with a short sound check on the street corner. I move slowly along the row so you can see how the gable shapes vary from house to house, then pause longer at the courtyard for questions. Afterwards I send a short note on the quarter's history and a few of the shops now inside the houses.

This suits anyone curious about the town's less obviously Prussian side. It also works well as a shorter session before or after a longer palace visit.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Potsdam before heading out.

  2. Mittelstraße gables 21 min

The camera moves along a row of red-brick, step-gabled houses, and I explain why Dutch craftsmen were invited here in the 1730s to build in their own style.

  3. A restored courtyard house 21 min

We stop at a house opened to the public, and I point out the low doorways and narrow stairs built to match Dutch, not Prussian, proportions.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Potsdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Brandenburger Landbrot (rustic rye bread) and Holländisches Viertel, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
