About this tour

This session stays at Glienicke Bridge, the crossing nicknamed the Bridge of Spies, looking at the span itself and the riverbank beside it. You see the exact point on the roadway where the Cold War border once ran between two halves of the same city. The session finishes at a riverbank viewpoint showing the bridge's full length across the Havel.

We start with a brief sound check by the water, since traffic noise picks up during the day. I keep the pace slow across the two stops and leave time for questions about the individual exchanges that took place here. A short note on the dates involved follows afterwards.

This suits anyone with an interest in Cold War history beyond the more famous Berlin sites. It also pairs well with the Cecilienhof session for a longer look at the period.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Potsdam before heading out.

  2. Glienicke Bridge 15 min

The camera holds on the steel bridge over the Havel, and I point out the exact spot on the roadway where the border between East and West once ran.

  3. The riverbank viewpoint 15 min

From the bank nearby you see the bridge's full span, and I explain how the isolated setting made it useful for a small number of quiet prisoner exchanges over the decades.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Potsdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Königsberger Klopse (meatballs in caper sauce) and Nauener Vorstadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
