  • The square of the living and the dead
  • One of Santiago's most atmospheric corners

About this tour

This session shows Praza da Quintana on both its levels, the lower square once used as a burial ground and the upper square facing the cathedral's clock tower. You see the steps connecting them and the wall of cathedral stone that closes one side. Xoán explains why locals still call it the square of the living and the dead.

The walk moves between the two levels a few times so the contrast is clear on screen, with Xoán pointing out details on the clock tower and the convent wall as he goes. He keeps the session short and focused on this one square.

This suits anyone who wants a quick, atmospheric stop rather than a longer walk. It also works well in the late afternoon, when Xoán says the light here is at its best.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Santiago de Compostela before heading out.

  2. Lower Quintana 15 min

The camera stands on the lower level of the square, known as the quintana of the dead, once a burial ground beside the cathedral.

  3. Upper Quintana and the Clock Tower 15 min

Up a short flight of steps, the upper level faces the cathedral's Berenguela clock tower. I explain why the square splits into two distinct levels with two very different histories.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Santiago de Compostela: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pimientos de Padrón and San Pedro, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
