The Porta Praetoria's Roman layers
Highlights
- Stonework dating to around 179 AD
- Roman and medieval work side by side
- A gate outlasting the fortress it guarded
- Nearly two thousand years, one structure
- Regensburg's Roman foundations, explained
About this tour
This session looks closely at the Porta Praetoria, the surviving gate of a Roman legionary fortress. You see the original second-century stonework and the later medieval additions built directly on top of it. It is a detailed look at how one structure carries nearly two thousand years of layered history.
I move slowly along the wall, since telling the Roman stone from later work takes a close, careful look. Questions are welcome throughout, and I send a short note afterwards on the archaeology involved.
This suits anyone with a real interest in Roman history or archaeology rather than a quick overview. It also pairs well with the patrician towers session for more of the old town's layered past.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
