City Hall and the pond of Tjörnin
Highlights
- A city hall built over the water
- Swans and ducks on Tjörnin
- A modern design meeting an old pond
- Wildlife in the middle of the capital
- A calm walk beside city water
About this tour
This session looks at Reykjavik's modern city hall, built to sit partly over the water of a pond that has remained a wildlife habitat in the middle of the capital. You see the building's design and the birdlife that shares the same small stretch of water. It stays by the pond throughout, moving at a relaxed pace.
After a short sound check by the water, I walk the pond's edge stop by stop, explaining the city hall's design before pointing out the birds using the water. I take questions live as they come and send a short note afterwards on the pond's other wildlife for anyone who wants to know more.
It suits anyone interested in modern architecture and urban wildlife, and anyone who wants a calmer session close to the city centre.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Reykjavik before heading out.
-
Reykjavik City Hall 15 min
The camera takes in the modern city hall built partly over the water, and I explain how its design was chosen to connect the building visibly to the pond beside it.
-
Tjörnin's birdlife 15 min
You see the pond's resident birds, including swans and a wide range of duck species, and I point out how the pond has stayed a wildlife habitat right in the middle of the city.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Reykjavik: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lamb soup (kjötsúpa) and 101 Reykjavik, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Reykjavik time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
