About this tour

This session is a Reykjavik food walk from lamb soup to the city's most famous hot dog. The camera follows kjötsúpa and plokkfiskur in a restaurant kitchen, rye bread baked slowly in the hot ground and served with skyr, and finishes at a hot dog stand open since 1937. Fermented shark and a shot of Brennivín close out the walk, shown rather than shared with the viewer.

After a sound check, the walk moves dish by dish in the order above, with the guide taking questions about each one as it comes up rather than at the very end. A written list of where to find every dish goes out once the call ends.

This suits anyone planning to eat their way through Reykjavik and wanting a shortlist of what is actually worth trying. It also suits anyone curious about Icelandic food who has heard of fermented shark and wants to see someone else deal with it first.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Not included

  • Food and drinks shown on camera
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Reykjavik before heading out.

  2. A restaurant kitchen 21 min

The camera follows a pot of kjötsúpa, the Icelandic lamb soup, next to a pan of plokkfiskur, the fish and potato stew, while the guide explains what makes each one a genuine winter dish.

  3. Geothermal rye bread 21 min

The guide shows rye bread being lifted from the hot ground where it has baked slowly using the earth's own heat, served alongside a spoon of skyr.

  4. The hot dog stand 21 min

At a stand open since 1937, the camera watches the classic Icelandic hot dog being built in order, and the guide ends with a small piece of fermented shark and a shot of Brennivín, explaining why one traditionally follows the other.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Reykjavik: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lamb soup (kjötsúpa) and Laugavegur, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Reykjavik time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

    Brilliant guide

Our guide knew every corner and the stories behind it. We learned more in two hours than in a week of reading.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
