About this tour

This session covers the Palace of the Grand Master, the fortified seat of the Knights Hospitaller in Rhodes Old Town. Kyriaki shows the palace gate and explains how much of what stands today was rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930s after a gunpowder explosion destroyed the original building. She then moves into the courtyard, pointing out Roman mosaics brought here from elsewhere.

Kyriaki checks her connection at the gate before walking in slowly, explaining the palace's layered history as she goes. She answers questions about the different periods of construction and pauses at the mosaics for a longer look. A short list of what was seen follows the call.

This suits travellers interested in the island's medieval and more recent Italian era history together. It also works well as a first orientation session before exploring the rest of the Old Town.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rhodes before heading out.

  2. The palace gate 21 min

Kyriaki stands before the fortified entrance of the Palace of the Grand Master, the camera taking in the thick walls rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930s after an explosion destroyed much of the original.

  3. The courtyard mosaics 21 min

Inside the courtyard, ancient Roman floor mosaics brought over from another Greek island decades ago come into view, and Kyriaki explains how the Italian restoration mixed genuine medieval stone with newer additions.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Rhodes: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pitaroudia (chickpea fritters) and Old Town (Medieval City), worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
