  • A park built over former defences
  • National symbol and hidden history, together
  • A short walk through layered meaning

About this tour

This session stands at the Freedom Monument and walks into the park beside it, following a canal that traces the line of the old city moat. You see what the monument commemorates and when it was raised, then a green space built directly on top of the city's former defences. It is a short session linking a national symbol with the fortified history beneath it.

I start with a sound check at the monument, then follow the canal into the park, answering questions as we go. A short note on the moat's original course follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in national history or landscape design. It also pairs well with an old town fortifications session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Riga before heading out.

  2. Freedom Monument 15 min

The camera holds on the tall column and its figure, and I explain what it commemorates and when it was built.

  3. Bastejkalns Park canal 15 min

You see the canal winding through the park, and I point out that it follows the line of the old city moat.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Riga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pīrāgi bacon pastries and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Riga time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
