Highlights

  • Tombs lining a road, not the city itself
  • An ancient route still walkable today
  • A quieter, pine-shaded stretch of countryside
  • History carried by an ordinary road surface

About this tour

This session walks a stretch of Via Appia Antica, the ancient road that once connected Rome to the south of Italy. You see original paving worn smooth by centuries of use, roadside tombs from a period when burial inside the city was forbidden, and a quieter pine-lined stretch further out. It is a walk through countryside carrying an unusually long history.

I walk at an easy pace, keeping the phone low on the road surface and the tombs beside it, taking questions throughout. I send a short note afterwards with more on the road's original length and route.

This suits anyone who wants a change of pace from the busier historic centre. It also pairs well with a session on the nearby catacombs.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. The original paving 17 min

You see stretches of paving still made from the original basalt blocks, worn smooth by centuries of cart wheels and marching soldiers.

  3. Roadside tombs 17 min

I point out tomb monuments lining the road, since burial inside the city walls was forbidden and the road became lined with them instead.

  4. The pine-lined stretch 17 min

I walk a quieter section shaded by umbrella pines, explaining why this particular stretch has stayed so much less built up than the city nearby.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Carciofi alla romana and Testaccio, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
