The old Jewish Ghetto and Portico d'Ottavia
Highlights
- An ancient portico over two thousand years old
- A community's history told from the inside
- Streets carrying centuries of continuous history

- History passed down before it was ever studied
About this tour
This session walks the old Jewish Ghetto, starting at the ancient Portico d'Ottavia that has marked its entrance for centuries. You see the portico's ancient columns and the narrow streets behind them, carrying a history I heard from my own family long before I studied it. It is a personal account of a neighbourhood's long, layered history.
I walk at an easy pace, pointing out details along the way and taking questions on the neighbourhood's history throughout. I send a short note afterwards with a little more background.
This suits anyone interested in Rome's Jewish history rather than only its ancient or baroque periods. It also pairs well with an evening call on Isola Tiberina nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
