Sámi history at Arktikum, from outside
Highlights
- A museum built into the landscape
- Sámi history, explained with care
- A glass tunnel through Arctic ground
- Objects described from personal knowledge
- Architecture that sits with the land
About this tour
This session looks at Arktikum from outside, the long glass tunnel and the building around it, while I describe the Sámi history and objects the museum holds inside. You see the architecture built to sit within the Arctic landscape rather than against it. I draw on two seasons working the museum's Sámi exhibits directly.
We move slowly around the building, since the design itself rewards a careful look before the stories begin. I take questions on Sámi history and culture as they come, speaking from a household background as well as museum work. The pace stays careful throughout, given the subject.
This suits anyone genuinely curious about Sámi history and culture, not just the building's architecture. It also works well alongside the Arctic Circle session for fuller context on the region.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rovaniemi before heading out.
-
The glass tunnel 21 min
You see the long glass corridor that runs through the museum, built partly underground, and I explain what the design was meant to evoke about the Arctic landscape around it.
-
The building's exterior 21 min
The camera moves around the museum's outer walls, and I describe specific Sámi objects and stories from the collection inside, since the camera cannot follow me through the exhibits themselves.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Rovaniemi: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cloudberries (lakka) with cream and Keskusta, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Helsinki time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
