Reindeer, from the fence line
Highlights
- A family herd, three generations kept
- Herding explained through the seasons
- Winter feeding, seen up close
- A herder's daily work, described plainly
- Reality checked against the usual picture
About this tour
This session looks at a working reindeer herd from the fence line, kept by my own family for three generations on the edge of the city. You see the animals up close and the areas used for winter feeding. I explain what herding actually involves through the year, since most people carry a picture quite far from the daily reality.
We move along the fence at an easy pace, since the animals themselves set the rhythm of the session. I take questions on the work directly, drawing on weekends I still spend helping with the herd. The tone stays practical rather than treating the animals as a backdrop.
This suits anyone genuinely curious about how reindeer herding actually works rather than the postcard version. It also works well alongside the Arctic Circle session for a fuller picture of Lapland life.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
