The university's hidden frog
Highlights
- A facade carved over decades
- A frog hidden in the stonework
- A university in use since the 1200s
- A courtyard most visitors miss
- Architecture explained by a former student
About this tour
This session covers the University of Salamanca's ornate facade and the quieter courtyard behind it. You see the carved medallions and coats of arms on the main entrance, including the small frog students traditionally try to spot themselves. I explain how buildings from the thirteenth century are still in continuous academic use today.
We spend most of the time at the facade itself, since the carving rewards a slow, careful look rather than a quick photo. I point out details in the Patio de Escuelas Menores that most visitors miss entirely. Questions about the university's history come up throughout, since I studied here myself.
This suits anyone interested in one of Europe's oldest universities and its architecture specifically. It also works well as a first stop before exploring the rest of the old town.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Salamanca before heading out.
-
The university facade 21 min
The ornate Plateresque facade is carved with medallions, coats of arms and mythological figures added over decades. I point out the small frog carved into the stonework that students traditionally try to spot without help.
-
Patio de Escuelas Menores 21 min
The quieter courtyard behind the main facade holds its own carved details, easily missed by visitors focused only on the main entrance. I explain how the university has used these buildings continuously since the thirteenth century.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Salamanca: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Chanfaina and Centro Histórico, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
