About this tour

This session goes inside Austria's biggest beer hall, run by monks until 1835, from its self-service barrel room to the food stalls of the Schmankerlgang. You see how visitors fill their own stone mugs and choose dishes stall by stall. It closes in the chestnut-shaded beer garden used through summer.

The guide opens with a sound check at the entrance, then walks hall to hall explaining how the old system still runs today. You can ask about the beer, the food stalls or the building's history as the walk continues. A short list of what is sold at each stall is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone curious about a working beer hall before visiting themselves, particularly if the self-service system seems confusing from the outside. It also suits former visitors who want the history behind a place they only briefly passed through.

  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Salzburg before heading out.

  2. Augustiner Bräu Mülln hall 21 min

The camera moves through the long stone halls of Austria's biggest beer hall, built by monks who ran it until 1835. The guide explains how the space still works exactly as it did then, hall by hall.

  3. The self-service barrel room 21 min

At the barrel room the camera follows drinkers rinsing their own stone mugs and filling them straight from wooden casks. The guide explains the self-service system and why regulars bring the same mug every visit.

  4. Schmankerlgang food stalls 21 min

In the Schmankerlgang corridor the camera passes stalls selling Salzburg dishes cooked to order. The guide talks through what each stall specialises in and points out the chestnut-shaded beer garden outside for summer evenings.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Salzburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Schnitzel and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
