The Festspielhaus and Salzburg's festival stage
Highlights
- A theatre built into a rock face
- A stage shaped around its own acoustics
- Home to a world-famous summer festival
- A season explained by someone trained in music
- The city's music history beyond one famous name
About this tour
This session covers the Festspielhaus, home to the Salzburg Festival's summer programme of opera and concerts. You see the theatre's long facade, built directly into the rock of the Mönchsberg, and then the entrance colonnade, designed around the acoustics the building needed. It is a session for anyone curious about the festival beyond its famous name.
I stay close to the facade throughout, explaining the festival's history and how the building's design serves its music programme. Questions come in on specific performances and performers, and I answer what I can from my own musical training. A short note on the current season follows once we finish.
This suits anyone with a genuine interest in classical music and opera. It also pairs well with the Mozart's birthplace session for a fuller picture of the city's music history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
