Getreidegasse's guild signs, up close
Highlights
- Signs made for customers who could not read
- Wrought-iron symbols marking a shop's trade
- A detail most visitors walk beneath unnoticed
- Original signs still used honestly today
- A close look at one street's smallest details
About this tour
This session covers Getreidegasse's wrought-iron guild signs, symbols hung above shop doorways long before most customers could read shop names. You see a stretch of the signs up close and then the shopfronts beneath them, several still using the old symbols honestly for their current trade. It is a close look at a detail most visitors walk beneath without noticing.
I move slowly along the street, holding the camera up toward each sign long enough to read its symbol properly. Questions come in on specific trades throughout, and I answer them as we go. A short note on which signs are original follows once we finish.
This suits anyone who wants a genuinely local detail rather than the obvious old town overview. It also works well as a short add-on to a longer walking session.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Salzburg before heading out.
-
Wrought-Iron Guild Signs 15 min
You see the wrought-iron signs above each doorway, symbols once used so illiterate customers could recognise a shop by trade rather than by name.
-
Shopfront Detail 15 min
The camera moves along a stretch of shopfronts still using the old symbols honestly, and I point out which trades they actually represent.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Salzburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Salzburger Nockerl and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
