About this tour

This session follows Mozart's Salzburg from his birthplace on Getreidegasse to the cathedral where he was baptised. You see Residenzplatz, the golden sphere in Kapitelplatz and the cliffside graves of St Peter's cemetery. Along the way the guide explains how the prince-archbishops' salt money built most of what is on screen.

After a short sound check the guide walks the route in the order the story unfolds, from birth to baptism to the archbishops who ran the city. There is time to ask questions at each stop about Mozart, the buildings or the salt trade behind them. A short list of the sites and their dates comes through afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in Mozart's early life or in how a small city ran on salt and church power. It also works for former visitors wanting a closer explanation of squares they may have only walked through.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Salzburg before heading out.

  2. Getreidegasse 21 min

The camera stops outside the yellow house on Getreidegasse where Mozart was born in 1756, its wrought-iron guild sign still hanging above the door. The guide points out which window belonged to the family's flat.

  3. Residenzplatz and the cathedral 21 min

On Residenzplatz the camera turns to Salzburg Cathedral, rebuilt after a seventeenth-century fire, where Mozart was baptised as an infant. The guide explains how the square doubled as a stage for archbishops showing off their power.

  4. Kapitelplatz 21 min

In Kapitelplatz the camera circles the giant golden sphere with a man standing on top of it. The guide reads the inspiration behind the sculpture and points toward the fortress rising directly above the square.

  5. St Peter's cemetery 21 min

Inside St Peter's walled cemetery the camera moves between wrought-iron grave markers cut into the cliff behind them. The guide explains how catacombs were carved into the rock here and how salt money paid for it all.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Salzburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Salzburger Nockerl and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
