The aqueduct, arch by arch
Highlights
- Granite held by weight alone
- Two thousand years without mortar
- A channel dropping by gravity
- Repairs visible across centuries
- Roman engineering, properly explained
About this tour
This session looks closely at the Roman aqueduct, from its tallest arches at Plaza del Azoguejo to a quieter stretch where you can see the channel's gentle drop in height. You see granite blocks held together purely by their own weight and repair work from different centuries along the way. I explain the engineering behind a structure that has stood for roughly two thousand years.
We move slowly, since craning your neck at this scale takes a moment to adjust to on camera. I explain the load calculations and construction methods as we go, drawing on my own architecture background. Questions about how the structure has survived this long come up in almost every session.
This suits anyone interested in Roman engineering and how ancient infrastructure actually worked. It also works well as a first stop before exploring the rest of the old town.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Segovia before heading out.
-
Plaza del Azoguejo 21 min
You stand beneath the aqueduct's tallest arches, granite blocks stacked without a trace of mortar holding them together. I explain how Roman engineers calculated the load without the mathematics we would use today.
-
The upper channel walkway 21 min
Following the structure along a quieter stretch, you see how the channel drops gently in height across its whole run to keep the water moving by gravity alone. I point out repair work from different centuries, visible in slightly mismatched stone.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Segovia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig) and Judería, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
