About this tour

This session goes through Diocletian's Palace from the cellars up, following the building's full life rather than a single era. The camera starts in the Roman substructures, the only part of the original plan still intact, climbs to the Peristyle and the open-domed vestibule, and moves through medieval houses built straight into the ancient walls. It ends in a small square where the palace still functions as a lived-in neighbourhood.

The call opens with a sound check and works upward through the palace in the order described above, with time for questions built into each level rather than saved for the end. A short list of what is original Roman work versus later addition goes out afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how a Roman emperor's retirement home became a living town centre, layer by layer. It also suits anyone who has walked through Split without realising how much of it is still standing on the original plan.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Split before heading out.

  2. Palace substructures 21 min

The camera moves through the underground halls beneath the palace, the only part of the original Roman plan still intact, now lined with stalls instead of storerooms.

  3. Peristyle and the vestibule 21 min

Climbing up into daylight, the camera reaches the Peristyle and then the emperor's vestibule, its dome open to the sky, and the guide explains what this space was built to do.

  4. Medieval houses in the walls 21 min

Walking the narrow lanes, the camera shows houses built directly into the old Roman walls during the Middle Ages, generations layering new rooms onto stone that was already a thousand years old.

  5. Palace market square 21 min

In a small square inside the walls, the camera catches the everyday rhythm of the market and sometimes a klapa group singing unaccompanied, the palace still working as a neighbourhood rather than a ruin.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Split: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Crni rižot (black risotto) and Diocletian's Palace, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Zagreb time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
