Diocletian's Palace substructures
Highlights
- Vaulted Roman halls underground
- Ceiling shapes matching rooms above
- A palace explained from underneath
- Where old engineering meets today's streets
- Split's Roman core, below ground
About this tour
This session goes underground into the substructures of Diocletian's Palace, the vaulted halls built to carry the emperor's rooms above. You see the ceiling shapes that still mirror the rooms once overhead, then climb back to street level to see how the layout below lines up with today's streets. It is Split's Roman core seen from underneath first.
We start below with a sound check, since the stone can carry an echo, then climb for the second stop as the light changes. Questions run throughout, and a short list of names and dates follows once we finish.
It suits anyone who wants the palace's Roman engineering explained properly rather than glimpsed in passing. It also works well as a first session before exploring the rest of the old town.

Itinerary

Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Split before heading out.
-
Underground halls 21 min
The camera moves through the vaulted basement halls built to support the palace above, and I point out the shapes in the ceiling that match the rooms once overhead.
-
Up to street level 21 min
We climb the stairs back into daylight, and I show how the substructure's layout still lines up with the streets running above it today.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Split: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Croatian wine and Varoš, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
