St Andrews Cathedral ruins and the pilgrim route
Highlights
- A broken mediaeval west front
- Headstones among the fallen walls
- St Rule's Tower, the oldest survivor
- Once the largest church in Scotland
- A pilgrim route explained on site
About this tour
This session walks through the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once the largest church in Scotland, ending at the surviving tower of St Rule's. You see the broken west front, headstones scattered among fallen walls, and the tower that once guided pilgrims to the site. Hamish explains how the cathedral fell into ruin after the Reformation and what still marks its original scale.
After a short sound check at the west front, the session moves through the ruin at an easy pace, pausing in the graveyard and finishing at the tower, with time for questions throughout. Hamish answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the cathedral's original layout.
It suits anyone interested in Scotland's religious history before the Reformation, and works well as a first stop for a longer St Andrews visit. It also appeals to those who enjoy old ruins generally.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
