About this tour

This session looks closely at St Rule's Tower and the oldest stones in the surrounding kirkyard, a quieter corner of the cathedral site most visitors move past quickly. You see the tower's full height from the base and the worn lettering on some of the site's oldest graves. Hamish explains what the tower was originally built for.

After a brief sound check, the session spends most of its short time examining the tower and the older stones nearby, with room for questions throughout. Hamish answers what comes up and sends a short note afterwards on the site's building history.

It suits anyone who has already seen the main cathedral ruin and wants more detail, and works well for genealogy enthusiasts. It also appeals to photographers interested in old stonework.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of St Andrews before heading out.

  2. The base of St Rule's Tower 15 min

The camera looks up the full height of the square tower, the oldest structure on the cathedral site. Hamish explains what the tower's original purpose was before the larger cathedral was built beside it.

  3. The oldest kirkyard stones 15 min

A cluster of weathered headstones stands apart from the newer graves. Hamish points out lettering on one stone that has almost worn away completely.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about St Andrews: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fife crab and South Street, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
