About this tour

This session walks Mariatorget, the square I cross most days between classes and home, and the streets branching off it. You see how the surrounding district has changed from working class to sought-after over recent decades. I explain that shift with a student's ongoing view of the neighbourhood rather than a historian's distance.

We move from the square down a couple of side streets at a relaxed pace, since the walk stays casual and informal throughout. I take questions on the neighbourhood as we go, drawing on my own studies in sociology. The tone stays like a conversation with a friend rather than a formal tour.

This suits anyone wanting a lived-in, everyday view of Södermalm rather than a highlights list. It also works well paired with the street art session for a fuller neighbourhood picture.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Stockholm before heading out.

  2. The central fountain 15 min

You see the square's fountain and surrounding green space, and I explain how this area shifted from working class to one of the city's more sought-after neighbourhoods.

  3. The streets branching off 15 min

The camera turns down one of the streets leading away from the square, and I point out specific shops and cafes that reflect the district's current character.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Stockholm: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Meatballs (köttbullar) and Gamla Stan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Stockholm time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 11 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
