What it actually takes to preserve a 17th-century ship
Highlights
- Wood stabilised after three centuries underwater
- A conservator's own account of the work
- Ongoing monitoring, decades later
- Chemistry behind keeping a ship intact
- A reading list sent after the call
About this tour
This call is a conversation about ship conservation, drawn from a season I actually spent on the Vasa's conservation team. I explain the chemical treatment that stabilised waterlogged wood after three centuries submerged. We do not visit the ship together, since this session focuses on the science behind keeping it intact.
I open with a short account of the original treatment process, then take your questions on conservation, then and now. The call runs as a discussion rather than a script. A short reading list follows for anyone who wants more detail.
This suits anyone curious about conservation science or maritime archaeology specifically. It also pairs well with the harbour session for fuller context on the ship itself.
