The fortress guarding Ortigia's harbour
Highlights
- A fortress guarding a harbour entrance
- Thirteenth-century walls meeting open water
- Both coastlines of Ortigia in one view
- Centuries of coastal defence explained
- A strategic point at the island's tip
About this tour
This session looks at Castello Maniace, a thirteenth-century fortress guarding the tip of Ortigia and the entrance to its harbour. You see the castle's thick outer walls and the point where they meet open water on both sides of the island. The camera stays on the public grounds around the castle throughout.
I walk the outer walls slowly, explaining the fortress's strategic position, then move to the tip of the island for a wider view of both coastlines. I take questions throughout and send a short note on the castle's history afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in military architecture or coastal defence. It also pairs well with the Roman Amphitheatre session for more of the region's layered history.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
