  • Tallinn's political history in one square

About this tour

This session covers Toompea hill, from the pink castle that now holds the Estonian parliament to the onion-domed cathedral facing it across the square. You see the contrast between the two buildings, one rooted in centuries of local rule and the other built in 1900 under Russian imperial administration, before finishing at a viewpoint over the lower town. It is a compact look at layered political history in one small square.

I start with a sound check on the castle side, then move across the square to the cathedral, and finish at the viewpoint with time for questions throughout. A short note on the hill's history follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in political history or church architecture. It also works well as a first session before exploring the lower old town.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Tallinn before heading out.

  2. Toompea Castle exterior 17 min

The camera holds on the pink castle facade, and I explain how it now houses the Estonian parliament above much older walls.

  3. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral 17 min

You see the onion domes across the square, and I explain why a Russian Orthodox cathedral was built here in 1900.

  4. Toompea viewpoint 17 min

The camera pans over the lower town's rooftops, and I point out the church spires visible from the hill.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Tallinn: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Black bread and Telliskivi, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Tallinn time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
