  • A district's early 20th-century growth
  • Two building styles, one street
  • A quieter architectural walk

About this tour

This session walks Karlova, pairing an Art Nouveau facade with a row of wooden houses nearby. You see the decorative plasterwork that marks the district's early growth, then the timber buildings that stand right beside it. It is a short look at how two building styles sit side by side in one Tartu district.

I start with a sound check by the facade, then move down the street at an easy pace, pausing at each building type for questions. A short note on the district's growth follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in architecture or contrasts in a single neighbourhood. It also works well alongside a Supilinn session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Tartu before heading out.

  2. Art Nouveau facade 21 min

The camera lingers on decorative plasterwork, and I explain how Karlova grew as the university town's population expanded.

  3. Timber house row 21 min

You see a row of wooden houses beside the Art Nouveau buildings, and I point out the contrast in building styles.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Tartu: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Smoked fish and Toome Hill, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Tallinn time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
