The Haagse Markt on a market morning
Highlights
- Hundreds of stalls, several days a week
- One of Europe's largest street markets
- Herring, prepared the traditional way
- Vendors who have held the same pitch for years
- A working morning, not a tourist stop
About this tour
This session moves through the stalls of the Haagse Markt on a working morning, then stops at a herring stand to explain a dish most visitors have heard of but never seen prepared. You see the scale of the market, hundreds of stalls held several days a week, and how a single stand can hold a pitch for decades. It is a busy, practical look at how the city actually shops.
We move slowly between stalls so the sound stays clear over the crowd, and I answer questions as they come rather than saving them. I point the camera at specific vendors rather than the whole market at once, since detail carries better than a wide shot here. A short list of stalls worth knowing follows by message.
It suits anyone curious about everyday Dutch food culture rather than a restaurant menu. It also works well early in a visit, before exploring the rest of the city.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of The Hague before heading out.
-
Market stalls 21 min
The camera moves between rows of stalls, and I explain which vendors have run the same pitch for years and how the market grew into one of the largest in Europe.
-
Herring stand 21 min
At a herring stand, you see the fish prepared the traditional way, and I explain the etiquette locals follow when eating it, without the camera ever leaving the stall.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about The Hague: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Erwtensoep (pea soup) and Scheveningen, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
Questions about this tour

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
