  • From a difficult past to a public square

About this tour

This longer session moves through three points in Tirana's twentieth-century history. You see a building that once housed state surveillance equipment, a small stone bridge that predates the city around it, and the vast central square in its current form. It follows a rough timeline from a difficult period to the present.

I explain the surveillance building plainly and without exaggeration, then slow down at the bridge since its survival is a genuinely unusual story. The square comes last, once there is enough context for how much it has changed.

This suits anyone who wants an honest look at Tirana's recent history rather than a version that skips past it. It also suits anyone curious about how the city's main square reached its current form.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Tirana before heading out.

  2. House of Leaves 21 min

The camera reaches a building that once housed the secret police's surveillance equipment, and I explain what the exhibits inside actually show without dwelling on anything more than the facts.

  3. Tanners' Bridge 21 min

You see a small stone bridge that predates almost everything built around it, and I explain how it survived the city's rapid growth largely by accident.

  4. Skanderbeg Square 21 min

The camera reaches the vast central square, and I explain how differently it has looked across several redesigns since the political system changed.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Tirana: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Byrek and Pazari i Ri, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Tirane time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
