About this tour

This session shows Toulouse waking up through its food, starting inside the covered Marché Victor Hugo and finishing among the specialist shops of Rue Saint-Rome. You see the market at its busiest hour and the produce that defines the region's cooking. It is a session built around the senses rather than monuments.

We start early, before the market gets too crowded to film comfortably, then move at a steady pace between counters. I explain the produce and its history as we pass rather than stopping for a formal talk, since the market itself does most of the work. A short list of what we saw follows by message.

This suits anyone curious about regional French food culture, and travellers planning their own visit to the market later. It also works well early in a trip, as an introduction to the city's flavours.

Included

  • Live video session with a local guide
  • A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
  • A short list of places and dishes to try later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Toulouse before heading out.

  2. Marché Victor Hugo ground floor 21 min

The camera moves along the covered market's butcher and cheese counters, stallholders setting up for the day under the same roof since the nineteenth century. I point out the counters supplying the restaurants upstairs, a detail most visitors never notice.

  3. Rue Saint-Rome food shops 21 min

We finish along the old pedestrian street, past small shops selling violet sweets and regional wine. I explain how the violet trade became tied to Toulouse in the first place, a history most people outside France have never heard.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Toulouse: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cassoulet toulousain and Capitole centre historique, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
