About this tour

This session follows the wooden bridge onto the island, around the rebuilt courtyard and up into the museum rooms inside the old ducal tower. You see how the red brick walls were pieced back together after standing as a ruin for two centuries, and where the original stonework still shows through. It stays inside the walls of Trakai's best known building for the whole call.

I open with a quick sound check on the bridge, then move stop by stop from the outer wall to the courtyard and up into the museum. Questions are welcome as we go, and I send a short note afterwards with the names of everything we saw.

This suits anyone curious about the Grand Duchy of Lithuania or medieval brick architecture. It also works well as a first look at Trakai before a longer session on the lakes or the Karaite quarter.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Trakai before heading out.

  2. The Wooden Bridge 21 min

You cross the long wooden footbridge that is still the only way to reach the island castle on foot, and I point out where the water runs deepest along the old moat line.

  3. The Castle Courtyard 21 min

Inside the walls, the camera turns slowly around the inner courtyard so you can see how the ducal tower and the outer wall were rebuilt in the twentieth century after two hundred years as a ruin.

  4. The Grand Duchy Rooms 21 min

Upstairs in the museum rooms, I show maps and objects from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and explain why Vytautas the Great chose this island for his court.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Trakai: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kibinai and Senamiestis (Old Town), worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vilnius time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
