  • The wooden kenesa, still in use
  • A community Vytautas the Great settled here
  • One family's house, five generations on

About this tour

This short session walks Karaimų gatvė, the street where Trakai's Karaite community has lived since the fourteenth century. You see the wooden houses built with three street-facing windows and the wooden kenesa still in use further along. It focuses on one small, distinct community rather than the whole town.

I do a quick sound check outside my family's house, then move house by house down the street before stopping at the kenesa. Questions are welcome the whole time, and I send a short note afterwards on what each window and detail meant.

This suits anyone curious about minority communities in Europe or the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It also works well as a short add-on to a longer castle session.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Trakai before heading out.

  2. Karaite Street Houses 15 min

You see the wooden houses along Karaimų gatvė built with three windows facing the street, and I explain the old Karaite belief behind each window's place.

  3. The Kenesa 15 min

Further down the street, the camera settles on the wooden kenesa, still used today, and I describe how the Karaite community that Vytautas the Great settled here in the fourteenth century still gathers inside.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Trakai: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cepelinai and Karaimai, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vilnius time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
