Canal Grande and the statue of James Joyce
Highlights
- A canal built for eighteenth-century trade
- Joyce, cast in bronze on a bridge
- Over a decade of writing in Trieste
- Trade and literature, on one canal
- A city that shaped an author
About this tour
This session covers the Canal Grande and the statue of James Joyce that stands on a bridge over it. You see the eighteenth-century canal, once used to unload goods directly into nearby warehouses, then stop at the statue to hear about the years Joyce spent living and writing in Trieste. It is a short session connecting the city's trading past to its literary one.
We start with a sound check along the canal, since it can be busy with people crossing the bridges. I move to the statue for the second stop and take your questions about Joyce's time in the city as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in literature or eighteenth-century urban planning. It also works well paired with a session at Caffè San Marco nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
