The tall ships at Forum Marinum
Highlights
- Two ships from different centuries, compared
- A steel hull beside an older wooden one
- A sailor's view of working ships
- What each vessel actually carried
- Construction explained hull to hull
About this tour
This session stays on the quay at Forum Marinum, looking at two preserved ships, the steel Suomen Joutsen and the older wooden Sigyn, moored side by side. You see how ship construction changed between them. I explain each vessel's working life before it became a museum piece.
We move between the two ships at an easy pace, since comparing them directly is more useful than treating each alone. I take questions from years working summers on ships like these myself. The session covers real maritime detail rather than a general history.
This suits anyone with an interest in ships, sailing or maritime trade. It also works for viewers who grew up near a harbour and recognise the pull of it.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Turku before heading out.
-
The full-rigged ship Suomen Joutsen 21 min
You see the vessel moored at the quay, and I explain what it actually carried and trained crews for before becoming a museum ship.
-
The barque Sigyn 21 min
The camera moves to the older wooden ship beside it, and I point out the construction differences between the two hulls from decades apart.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Turku: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Baltic herring and Port Arthur, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Helsinki time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
