University of Glasgow's Gothic towers
Highlights
- A Gothic tower built by Victorians
- A quadrangle at the campus centre
- Vaulted stonework in a covered cloister
- A campus built to look older
- University architecture explained on site
About this tour
This session stands in the University of Glasgow's central quadrangle before moving through its covered cloisters, looking at a campus built to look far older than it is. You see the Gothic revival tower rising above the quad and the vaulted stonework of the cloister walk. Catriona explains the Victorian construction behind a building that reads as mediaeval at first glance.
After a short sound check in the quad, the session moves into the cloisters for the vaulted detail, with time for questions throughout. Catriona answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the campus's public areas.
It suits anyone interested in Victorian architecture's fondness for older styles, and works well for prospective students. It also appeals to those who enjoy dramatic university buildings.

-
The main tower and quadrangle 21 min
The camera stands in the university's central quadrangle, the Gothic revival tower rising directly above. Catriona points out the building's Victorian construction, despite looking centuries older.

The cloisters 21 min
Moving under a covered cloister walk, the camera takes in the vaulted stonework. Catriona explains how the cloisters were modelled on genuinely mediaeval examples elsewhere in Britain.

Time to ask anything about Glasgow: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cullen skink and Merchant City, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
