Bridges and a working lock on the Oudegracht, live
Highlights
- A canal built on two street levels
- A working lock raising and lowering boats
- Cafes sitting right at the waterline
- Bridges built for wharf-level traffic
- The canal's mechanics, not just its cafes
About this tour
This session follows the Oudegracht away from its busiest cafe stretch to look at how the canal actually works, from its two-level wharves to a lock that still operates today. You see boats queuing to pass through the lock and the unusual sunken street level that makes the canal so distinctive. It is a more mechanical, less cafe-focused look at a canal most visitors only see from a terrace.
We walk at a steady pace along the water, timing our arrival at the lock for when a boat is likely to be passing through. I explain the two-level system as we cross a bridge rather than from a single fixed spot.
It suits anyone curious about how the canal functions rather than just how it looks. Viewers with an interest in engineering or old infrastructure tend to enjoy this one most.

Oudegracht Bridges 21 min
You see one of the many stone bridges crossing the canal at the level of the old wharves, and I explain how the two-level street system lets traffic pass above while cafes sit right at the water.
-
Weerdsluis Lock 21 min
The camera holds on a working lock where boats are raised and lowered between two water levels, and I explain why the canal needed one at all.

Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Utrecht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Poffertjes and Wittevrouwen, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
