About this tour

This session walks Utrecht's wharf cellars and Dom quarter, from the two-level Oudegracht to Domplein, where the Dom Tower still stands beside the gap left by its collapsed nave. The guide moves on to the quiet Pandhof garden and the convents along Lange Nieuwstraat. It traces how the city grew up around a cathedral that was never fully rebuilt.

The session opens with a sound check, then moves through the four stops from canal to cathedral square to garden, with time for questions along the way. A short list of what was covered follows once the call wraps up.

This suits anyone interested in Dutch church history or medieval town planning, whether visiting soon or not at all. It also suits returning visitors who want the Dom quarter explained properly.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Utrecht before heading out.

  2. Oudegracht wharf cellars 21 min

The camera looks down from street level into the Oudegracht's wharf cellars, and the guide explains how this two-level canal lets boats unload directly into cellars that are now cafés and shops.

  3. Domplein and the Dom Tower 21 min

On Domplein, the guide points out the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the open gap beside it where the cathedral's nave once stood, before it collapsed in a storm in 1674.

  4. Pandhof garden 21 min

Inside the quiet cloister garden of the Pandhof, the guide explains how this small courtyard survived while the rest of the cathedral around it changed over the centuries.

  5. Lange Nieuwstraat 21 min

Along Lange Nieuwstraat, the guide points out old convent buildings and almshouses, and explains what remains of the Roman fort once buried beneath this part of the city.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Utrecht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Stroopwafel and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
