Murano, glassmaking street by street
Highlights
- Furnaces working since 1291
- A trade moved for fire safety
- Glass, shaped step by step
- An island built around one craft
- Murano's fire and detail, up close
About this tour
This session covers Murano, the island where Venetian glassmaking has been centred since 1291. You see a street of working furnaces and hear why the trade was moved here in the first place, then stop at a shop window to look closely at a finished piece and the steps behind it. It is a craft session built around a trade still very much alive.
We start with a sound check by the furnace street, since the heat can affect the phone's camera briefly. I move to the shop window for the second stop and take your questions about the craft as we go. A short reading note on the island's history follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in craft or design. It also works well paired with a session on the Squero di San Trovaso's gondola workshop.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Venice before heading out.
-
Murano furnace street 21 min
The camera moves along a street of working glass furnaces, and I explain how the trade was moved to this island in 1291 to keep the fire risk away from Venice itself.
-
Glass shop window 21 min
We stop at a shop window, and I point out details in a finished piece and describe the steps that go into shaping it before it cools.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Venice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Baccalà mantecato and San Marco, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
